OSI and Magic

Introduction

Compared to traditional occult groups and secret societies, OSI is deficient in the study and understanding of magic. Some of this deficiency is due to OSI being late to the game, so to speak. Magicians have been doing magic for centuries, while OSI has been studying magic for [CLASSIFIED].

Special Operations Group 22

Within OSI the division purposed with the study of magic is Special Operations Group 22 (OSI/SOG-22). SOG-22 is known within some circles as “The Black Box.”

SOG-22 primarily pursues a traditional scientific approach to the study of magic. Laboratory experimentation under controlled conditions is the primary methodology, with field observation comprising a small portion of SOG-22 activity. SOG-22 does not operate field agents, and generally relies on OSI/SOG-0 for such work.

SOG-22 also relies on OSI divisions devoted to advanced science and technology research, including the Foreign Technology Division.

Operational Theory of Magic

SOG-22 has developed an operational theory of magic based on the results of vigorous experimentation. The theory is summarized as follows:

Our reality manifests within three physical dimensional manifolds that exist simultaneously within a non-physical manifold we refer to as “time.”

There are additional dimensional manifolds which exist in adjunction with or parallel to our reality.

That which is considered “magical energy” is a waveform manifestation existing in a dimensional manifold adjunct with our reality.

This energy may be manipulated by a variety of methods, including sonic vibrations (especially musical performance), intense physical activity, electromagnetic impulses, and mechanical devices.

Some individuals appear to possess an innate ability or talent in the manipulation of this energy.

Magic Items

OSI possesses a limited number of magical items and artifacts. These materials are available only through special assignment, and may be assigned only to agents who have proper training and ability.

OSI regulations require that "powerstones" or other mana-charged devices (i.e. "magic items") recovered in the field be turned in to OSI. "Powerstones" and similar replenishable sources of magical energy are kept at the Castle for obvious reasons. While it is possible to request some magic items for field use (if one may show a specific need for it), powerstones are most definitely never issued for field use.

Alchemy

See also Alchemy (Dark Jazz).

Field and laboratory personnel specializing in alchemy operate with a limited formulary. Any elixir with a common retail cost of more than $1,000 per dose is considered a secret formula. Knowledge of and development/experimentation with these elixirs is restricted to members of SOG-22 with Security Clearance 2 and Administrative Rank 2.

Operational usage of elixirs derived from secret recipes may be allowed on assigned basis.
