Life Aboard Thaumas I

Thaumas I is located along the equator, near Kiribati. Like the other stations, it was submerged shortly before the attack on Earth by extraterrestrial drones on August 24th, 2045. It originally housed 100,000 people, but now houses only 30,000. 70,000 people fell victim to radiation poisoning in the weeks following the attack. As such, the station has plenty of extra space and provisions. In theory, Thaumas I could host its current population for approximately 100 years, even while submerged, provided that energy rationing continued for that entire time. If it were able to return to the ocean's surface, it could house 100,000 people indefinitely.

Thaumas I's command structure consists of Harold Tran, director of engineering, Robert Bolt, director of defense, Jessica Tran, director of facilities management, Herman Waltzer, mayor, and Maria Candela, vice mayor. The latter two were elected to their positions by the residents of the facility in the months prior to The Enemy's attack. The citizens of the Thaumas stations voted to disband the parent corporations of the facility and make the facilities and all property aboard publicly owned; the old corporations are now considered by most to be defunct, though corporatist sentiments (and most likely corporatist factions) still persist. In the wake of this, all corporate executives aboard the Thaumas facilities were stripped of their official titles. Sarah McKillup serves aboard the station as an engineer and an advisor to Harold Tran, but does not participate in command decisions. She is one of four people aboard Thaumas I currently capable of survival outside the station.

Thaumas I has several submersible vessels docked beneath its lowest decks. These vessels have been mostly powered down and left dormant. Former Halon soldiers perform readiness drills on a regular basis, and keep the vessels similarly ready. Robert Bolt, a Submersible Supercarrier captain, oversees all military personnel aboard the ship. The bulk of the station's defense force comprises former professional Halon soldiers, though large numbers of additional residents have volunteered to serve in Thaumas I's defense forces, and train in their spare time.
