Star Fleet Serial Number (defunct)
RE: Starfleet Serial Numbers FM: Commodore B.N. Counter Starfleet Command Logistics Operations Date: 15 FEB 2206
Introduction
The need for unique alphanumeric identifiers, also known as serial numbers, is long observed tradition and practice within military organizations. Various treaties throughout history, for example, have served to allow captured personnel to restrict identification to name, rank, and serial number. In an effort to both preserve and extend this tradition to service within Starfleet, the following alphanumeric system for uniquely identifying individual personnel is proposed.
Structure
The Star Fleet Serial Number (SFSN) is a unique identifier to be assigned to all Starfleet personnel. The SFSN is an alphanumeric code that identifies individual personnel by planetary origin, orientation with Starfleet, and professional classification within Starfleet. The SFSN consists of four alphanumeric groupings, separate by an N-dash.
First Grouping
The first grouping of the SFSN consists of two letters that designate Starfleet orientation. This includes but is not limited to Starfleet training and education. While individuals may obtain higher education at later dates in their service to Starfleet, this designation identifies their initial classification upon their induction date. It is not subject to change. (Refer to the final grouping of the SFSN for more detailed professional or technical career information.)
SA | Graduate of Starfleet Academy |
SC | Graduate of Starfleet Command School |
SM | Graduate of Starfleet Medical Academy |
ST | Graduate of Starfleet Technical Services School |
Second Grouping
The second grouping is a three-digit combination that serves to designate the planetary origin and species of individual personnel. The first digit of this unit corresponds with planetary/racial origin of the individual, also referred to as the homeworld of the individual personnel, usually but not always a Federation member world. This designation also includes colonies of the homeworld.

2 | Andorian |
3 | Tellarite |
4 | Alpha-Centauran |
5 | Prellarian |
6 | Deian |

9 | Other |
The second and third digits of the three-digit grouping designate the geographic point of origin on the homeworld of the individual personnel. Included in this document is an example of the designations of personnel of Earth origin. This designation may also describe birth on off-world colonies. See related documentation for designations of other worlds or races.

Third Grouping
The third grouping consists of 4 digits. Assignation of these digits differs according to the homeworld and other factors associated with the individual personnel.
With regard to individual personnel of Earth origin, this 4-digit grouping is randomly acquired. This randomization will serve to provide further unique identifiers for individual personnel.
Fourth Grouping
The fourth grouping consists of two alphanumeric units. This grouping identifies the professional or technical classification of the individual personnel within Starfleet. Additions may be made to this grouping as needed and on approval of Starfleet Command.
Note: This is the only grouping of the serial number commonly subject to change within the career of the individual personnel.
