Mission SHG-001: AAR (After Action Report)

Ensigns Davies and Roares were assigned to escort Ambassador Daniels on a diplomatic away mission to the Dunsel Colony of Gules-1, a colony of Stannites seeking religious freedom and operational autonomy. The purpose of this mission was to reestablish Federation contact with the colony, with an eye to securing agreement for the building of a Federation starport on the surface of Gules-1.

In order to minimize intrusion into the colonists’ lives the away team dressed in indigenous clothing, and carried only weapons and equipment permissible under the Stannites’ religious views of technology. At Ensign Roares’ suggestion a concession was made to carry modern medical supplies planetside, “disguised” as more primitive medicines. This suggestion would ultimately prove critical to mission success.

The away team personnel (Ambassador Daniels, Ensign Davies, Ensign Roares) beamed down to a remote area on the surface of Gules-1, close enough to reach the colony on foot, but far enough away to minimize the chance of being observed by colonists. An initial attempt to reach the main settlement by nightfall was unsuccessful, so the away team chose a secondary contact location. With the notable exception of Ensign Roares being attacked and wounded by local fauna, the hike was uneventful.

This nearer village was occupied by a Stannite clan known as Diggers, people who built their dwellings underground. The away team posed as traveling Stannites from a more remote clan known as Fishers, who subsist by netting fish from the lakes of Gules-1. Other groups include the Farmers, who raise crops and cattle; the Fruit-Eaters, a newly-founded separatist clan; and the Hunters, who hunt wild game from the forests.

Numerous meetings took place over the next two days with many of the colony elders. It quickly became apparent that the colony was being threatened by an unknown epidemic, characterized by swelling of the face, fever, and weakness. Left untreated, contracting this disease led to death. Not all clans were affected – in particular, the Fruit-Eaters seemed immune.

Elder Lynch, the oldest and most beloved of all the Stannite colonists, consented to treatment for his disease from the medical supplies carried by Ensign Roares. His subsequent recovery and support for further Federation medical assistance were instrumental in convincing the colonists to accept limited Federation contact (as well as the continued presence of Ambassador Daniels).

Ship-board analysis of the disease revealed it to be Rigellian Fever. Further analysis of Gules-1 fruit samples procured by Ensign Roares show that a treatment can be synthesized from local flora. The Dunsel colonists are thus free to continue their own self-determination as they see fit without further Federation contact. It is hoped that the away team’s assistance and Ambassador Daniels’ presence among them will influence the colony to look upon future Federation interactions more favorably.
