Grittematic
The name for a genre or type of literary creation that consists of gritty realism and cinematic action or themes. The term was coined by Cal Godot in 2009. The "gritty realism" is usually the game world itself, while the "cinematic" element lies in the traits and powers of the player characters. Games set in the Dark Jazz universe, for example, feature a setting as obstructively bureaucratic and physically dangerous as "reality," but the characters possess abilities far and above what is considered "realistic," making all but the most cosmic events well within their capabilities to handle.
