The International Netherlands Group and Credit Suisse merged in 2017. In the ensuing years, ING-Credit Suisse began acquiring smaller banks throughout the United States and Europe. In the European Financial Crisis of 2022, ING-Credit Suisse emerged virtually unscathed, and seized on the opportunity to purchase the former giants of European banking, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, and the Royal Bank of Scotland. As of 2025, ING-Credit Suisse was the largest bank in the world, with employees numbering in the millions, and operations in nearly every country in the world. In the ensuing decade, it made tremendous forays into North American banking, acquiring several of North America's largest banks. 2036 marked its first year as the largest financial institution within the United States, finally edging out rival, Wells Fargo. On the international scene, ING-Credit Suisse is dominant in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, and Africa. It has operations in South America and Asia but, in those areas, it is still well behind The Sumitomo Bank, based in Japan, and The Industrial & Commercial Bank of China.
