Public Instruction
Structured programs of learning, sometimes with definitive start and end dates. Intensive training available in most cases.
The Academy at Tarantia
- “Strong Mind, Strong Body, Strong Heart, Strong Citizen.”
Located near Great Library in Old Tarantia
Skills taught: Most IQ-based skills are available. Additionally, “classical” DX skills such as Acrobatics, Boxing, Bow, and Wrestling are taught.
Notes: Daily lectures of up to four hours per day in length. Up to four hours daily of self-study may also be used to accelerate learning. Intensive study of individual subjects also available. Admission by letter of introduction from previous graduate only.
Cost: Hourly lesson costs base don difficulty of skill being taught (E/A: $10hr; H: $20/hr. VH: $30/hr.) Additional gratuities are paid privately to instructor. Intensive instruction is available at 4x these rates.
Mercenary Training Camp
Located 16 leagues north of Tarantia at Pallantides Keep.
Basic Training: Axe/Mace; Hiking; Knife; Shield; Shortsword; Spear.
Other skills taught: Bow; Crossbow; Fast-Draw (Knife); Fast-Draw (Shortsword); Tactics.
Techniques available: Close Combat (Shortsword); Feint (Shield); Spinning Strike (Spear); Targeted Attack (Spear Thrust/Face); Targeted Attack (Spear Thrust/Neck).
Perks: Grip Mastery (Spear)
Notes: 60-day intensive training period requires HT 12+ to complete. Successful completion provides 1 CP in each of the basic training skills; plus an additional 4 CP to spend as desired on other skills or techniques. Graduates are also able to use techniques at default.
Cost: $5200* (Previous service or agreement to future service to barony or kingdom reduces cost by 25% per six-months of service)
Private Instruction
Rigello Pallatides, Swordsman
Located in Noble District.
Skills: Broadsword; Knife; Shortsword; Two-Handed Sword
Notes: Instructor of many noble and merchant sons alike. Provides 2-4 hours of intensive training per day.
Cost: $16/hr
Gonzago Kordava
Located in Old Tarantia
Skills: Knife; Wrestling.
Techniques: Arm Lock (Knife or Wrestling); Armed Grapple (Knife); Back Strike (Knife); Choke Hold (Knife); Feint (Knife); Retain Weapon (Knife); Reverse Grip (Knife); Spinning Strike (Knife).
Kharas Kosala
Located in the forests about twenty leagues northwest of Tarantia
Skills: Animal Handling (Goats); Brawling; Cooking; Housekeeping; Survival (Woodlands); Two-Handed Sword
Techniques: Armed Grapple (Two-Handed Sword); Bind Weapon (Two-Handed Sword); Close Combat (Two-Handed Sword); Counterattack (Two-Handed Sword); Kicking; Knee Strike; Retain Weapon (Two-Handed Sword); Targeted Attack (Two-Handed Sword Thrust/Face); Targeted Attack (Two-Handed Sword Thrust/Neck); Targeted Attack (Two-Handed Sword Thrust/Vitals Chinks); Trip.
Perks: Grip Mastery (Longsword); Skill Adaptation (Bind Weapon defaults to Two-Handed Sword); Sure-Footed (Uneven).
Notes: Kharas is rumored to have fought alongside King Conan and was once counted among the king's friends. He only teaches 2-3 students at a time. Applicants must endure grueling test of character and strength before being accepted. Those with less than ST 12; HT 12; DX 12 (and possibly even Luck) need not apply. Successful applicants live with Kharas on his farm in the woodlands north of Tarantia; feeding chickens and caring for his goat herds while also learning the longsword.
