With a population numbering nearly five thousand, Newgrange (Sí an Bhrú) is a thriving river town with a democratically elected mayor and Druid sheriff, fertile farmland and abundant fishing make this town an important center of economic activity. The thriving commerce enables Newgrange to support a number of businesses and guilds. There are also schools and temples, as well as a number of inns and taverns.

Newgrange is also known for its local regiment of the Army of Midhe. A fierce group of river-borne warriors known as the River Rats train here, and the White Mount Regulars are known for their fearlessness and ferocity. The army complex occupies a large section in the center of the village. This complex is also the home of the purchasing and procurement center of the king’s army, making the military an important aspect of the Newgrange economy.

Farming has long been central to the local economy. The town itself hugs the river and would be vulnerable to yearly flooding were it not for the canals, which carry rich water to the inland farms. Newgrange County is one of the largest shires in Midhe, and most of it is farmland. Crops grown in Newgrange travel throughout the kingdom, carried by Newgrange boats up and down the River Boyne.

Newgrange after the Great Devastation

The druids who remained after the events in the Outlands congregated at Newgrange where they began constructing a compound utilizing the Brú na Bóinne mound complex. This is now the location of the re-established College of Druids and the center of Druid activity. As a result of this development, the village of Newgrange has almost tripled in size. The druids no longer participate in politics, so the traditional occupation of the sheriff's office by the local druid was abolished. A council of town elders consisting of the most powerful local families selects the village sheriff. The council abolished the practice of mayoral elections.

Newgrange is among the most prosperous villages in the kingdom of Midhe. The rapid growth has caused some serious problems, mostly in housing and employment. There has also been a rise in crime, but the establishment of a constabulary is expected to diminish that problem.
